more money to be paid by the consumer, but it won't change driving behavior which is at the root of the problem.

Yes it will change it, by making it cost more. Yes you can drive a tank and be safe, but it is not cost effective

Another reason to charge more for vehicles (but I guess for a GOOD reason).

Oh Toyota...!
Realize that the U.S., German, and scandinavian auto manufacturers were actually the first to crash-test vehicles taken from their assembly lines. They originally did frontal/rear collision tests. IIHS then came along and first started the 5-mph bumper testing in the vane of reducing repair costs. Then it evolved into collisions that result in personal injury. They started with side impact. Then offset frontal collisions. Now its working on frontal collisions just outside the unibody equivalent of the frame, that tend to peel-back the fender, A-pillar, and drivers door.
History of the Car Crash Dummy
And let me emphasize that the IIHS is an Insurance Industry group of organizations funded by auto insurers, with no ties to the Federal government, that actively lobbies Congress on behalf of the auto insurance industry.
Realize that much of the new types of collision testing, came about with the introduction of unibody vehicles. A vehicle with a full-body steel frame has more structurally stability against such impacts, but unibody vehicles are better at dissipating the impact energy of a crash.
While the industry group efforts have resulted in 'safer' cars, how many of you have had your insurance reduced?

Too bad human judgement isn't a factor in testing.

This was the topic of a previous article posted but this article has a better coverage of the details of how the test is done. Now they need to report what happens when you hit a Tree. It's much worse than another vehicle, But similar to this test with the force frequently all on 25--50% of the Vehicle.

In 55 years I can only recall 2 crashes like this. 1 involved a mid 70's Ford mid sized car that hit a pole at over 100 MPH both driver and passenger survived the crash.

Crash deaths are an acceptable part of life. Otherwise, they would be trying to do to automobiles what they are trying to do to firearms.

Seems like if your vehicle finally gets a descent insurance rate, it is probably going to go up. Feels, like they want you to buy a vehicle that you cannot afford to keep a low insurance rate, or your original insurance rates will go up.

Well if people stop speeding, drink and driving, Texting, sexting, and follow the laws we have now, crushes would be reduced a whole heck of a lot.
