Taxpayers' group offers gas tax 'rebate' to some
Thursday, May 15, 2008
CTV News -- The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is launching its annual campaign against gas tax "gouging," while a gasoline industry watcher says Canadians are facing record-high prices at the pump.

Michael Ervin of Calgary's M.J. Ervin and Associates told CTV.ca that Canadians are paying the highest prices he's ever recorded in his weekly pump price survey.

In the weekly result released Tuesday, Ervin found an average price of $1.29 per litre, up 3.9 cents over the May 7 average.

Why even bother to try and conserve, the gas prices still continue to climb, the gas companies has got everybody right by the gonades and making billions, just keep pulling the hard earned cash out of your wallet and purses and when your out of cash use your thumb or buy a bicycle and enjoy the exercise because gas prices will not go down and don't forget about your heating fuel, be ready for five dollars a gallon to heat your home

hangupanddrive, King George does NOT care. He lied to the American public to create a war in Iraq that completely destablized the region and led to these costs being so dramatically higher. He even seems shocked when a reporter tells him gas is approaching $4 a gallon and his word-for-word reply to the reporter was, "Oh, I hadn't heard that." No kidding. When King George the First (the first economic genius to come out of that clan) makes MILLIONS a year from the Houston oil business, you better believe he loves the higher prices. And $4 a gallon doesn't faze a multi-millionaire.

Bush doesn't care?? Think anyone else in the white house will make any difference. Fuel prices are going nuts due to the world economy and demand, along with taxation, and the oil thieves. No one factor is to blame, its multiples.

None of this is going to matter. Bush doesn't care b/c he is an oil man himself and he is making money regardless. You have to do what you need to do for yourself and save money b/c the government isn't going to do anything to help us.

It must be getting close to elections in Canada as well as here. All the politicians are starting to get interested in gas prices.

mars48; You hit the nail on the head with the 'slow down' point. I have driven on I96 at the legal speed and watched all the rest of the cars wizz by. It is the same on Ontario`s 401 where I own the right lane, the rest of the cars occupy the left as they go past.

I read today that in Vancouver on $60 fill up there is almost $11 levy included in the price for municipality alone.

Brace yourselves, because the high cost of gasoline in Canada (CDN$5.20 per gallon) is warning of what we face sooner than later, and it won't ever go back down.

The "tax break" if the Feds stopped collecting the gasoline tax would barely be seen at the pump, would be eaten away by the weakened dollar and higher price of crude oil, and would make our highways even in worse repair than they are now...

There is *NO* quick solution, but I will be adding solar panels to the roof and scouting an electric or compressed air car

There are lots of things each of us can do to reduce our gasoline expenditure. We can: combine trips, leave 10 to 15 minutes early and reduce our speed. We can get in the habit of driving slower all the time - engineers increased the mileage by 23% with this tactic, using a regular assembly line car - not a hybrid. All kinds of things we can do.
Don't wait for the government to help you out.

This is not the place nor the time to politically answer kingdick. Suffice it to say that no politician (republican nor democrat) has squarely taken on the issue of rapidly escallating fuel costs. (Do they have sand in Minnesota? Comes in handy when you want to bury your head.)

In the USA
-----------------------------------
The Fed's have done plenty but MOST of it has made it BETTER for the rich and WORSE for the working middle class.
-----------------------------------
In the many years before 2006 the Republicans control of our government did not foster increasing the supply of oil.
They also deregulated the markets which has allowed the Speculators freedom to RAISE the price of Crude with no regard to supply and demand.
Another bad thing that happened on their watch is all the Control of fuel to very few companies, no competition.

Assuming USD - CND parity, $1.29/L = $4.88/US gallon. Ouch! But that said, our Canadian neighbors have higher taxes on thier "petrol" than we have.

It really doesn't seem to matter . . . we either pay it at the pump, at the grocery store, or on our trash bill! My trash bill went up an additional $5 on top of what they were already charging me to cover their gas. So their charging every customer $10 to cover their gas . . . I think someone else is making a profit on the gas!!!!!

why does anyone believe that the government's so called rebate will give any relief...let's face it if the so called releif is delivered the difference will be swallowed up by an equal increase from big oil...therefore no difference in price to the consumer..;(

Brockvillian is on the right track. With the income at the pump that the government takes, it's like hiring the fox to watch the henhouse expecting it to look after our best interests.

How about the greedy Oil Companies giving us a Profit Rebate. Lets take the joy out of owning Oil Stock and the price will drop in half. We are being riped off.

I don't trust the government or oil companies. It would be nice to see some relief at the pumps, but I am sure we will eventually pay in other ways.

Big Oil companies give incentive to people by extra credit using their Gasoline Cards etc. Certain BP Oil and Exxon gas Stations are selling gas at much lower price than others.
let the free market wotk out.
Chryslers now offering fixed 2.99 / gallon for two years two new buyers of certaing Chrysle Models.
