A Drop in U.S. CO2 Emissions

technology review -- More electricity in the United States is being generated by natural-gas fired power plants, and less from coal. This shift, combined with unusually low heating demand last winter and reduced gasoline demand, meant the country emitted the smallest amount of energy-related carbon dioxide in a January-to-March stretch since 1992, according to a report out this month from the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

Historically, coal has been the country’s dominant source of electricity, but in the final two months of 2011 its electricity contribution fell below 40 percent for the first time since the spring of 1978, says the EIA. Meanwhile, contributions from gas-fired plants have been steadily increasing, and in April of this year the contributions from coal and gas were equal—each was the

with less manufacturing in the US, it's no surprise there is a drop in CO2 emissions. Less energy use, less burning of fuel sources.

Aah, PDQBlues but they always have and now it even easier for the public to view full disclosure of hydraulic fracturing fluid.

Take a look right here.

Yes, natural gas produces less pollution and burns more efficiently. When fracking corporations can secure natural gas using safer methods and with full public disclosure of the chemicals they use, then more people would be in favor of it.

There is no need to be measuring CO2. Find a real job.

Add in Obama and his EPA's war on coal and sure there's reduction. By the way don't tell the Church of Global Warming!

There are no simple answers to big questions or problems, and like this news, the changes are from multiple paths all converging at one place in one time. Added together, it is very good news for the environment, and that is with people barely trying.

Many small brooks will make up a mighty river.

You don't need wind turbines to supply ALL the electricity, just a bit.
You don't have to shut off your electricity, just waste less by replacing electric ranges with natural gas/propane when the time comes, and electric/oil/natural gas/propane hot water with solar hot water.
You don't need solar PV to supply all the electricity, just a bit.
You don't have to shut off your heat or AC, just dial it back a tiny bit, and insulate a bit.
You don't have to shut down all the coal plants right away, just shut them down bit by bit replacing every 4 with 3 natural gas--with the balance made up of efficiency savings and those renewables.
You don't have to heat your house and hot water exclusively with electricity, or heating oil, or natural gas, or wood--solar air heating panels and solar hot water panels can lower or eliminate those costs.

Its all about seeing a big picture as thousands of small pieces you add one by one, like a jig-saw.

like switching to a lower tar cigarette....

only kidding ourselves...

exchanging one bad energy source for one only slightly better...

go all the way... and don't ever look back.

Don't distract from Coal. Coal is getting cleaner and is considerably cheaper than other forms of fuel and in America we are blessed with an abundance of Coal. What we are not blessed with is a president who worries about the people.

The bottom line here is Gas prices continue to soar because of fed gov failure. Emissions are my least concern when my hard earned dollars are being ripped off.

Even though we are reducing our co2 emissions China and India are not. They will more than make up for what we do not create with their coal fired plants. What matters is that we are politically correct regardless of what they do. We must make a good appearance, after all; because appearance is everything.

More government propaganda from obama administration. Doubtful that it is truthful any more than any of the other lies from that administration.

Vote for change in November.

This should be more of a reason to let us have normal vehicles, not all this electrical vehicles. One of these power plants, produce more in a day, than a 1976 Lincoln Continental with a bad carburator for 15 years.
